Whew! It is 11:15pm and we are finally inside after celebrating our country's independence by blowing stuff up. Chris and Mar are here this weekend and joined in the festivities, as well as our friends Aaron & Shannon and their son Nolan, and my mom. We barbecued and then watched as the big kids launched bottle rockets (I still don't understand their purpose) and the little kids launched Pop-its and Party Poppers.
After dessert and the setting of the sun, we headed to the front yard to enjoy the fireworks display. Ernie and Chris had made the run to get the good stuff earlier in the day, so we were ready with the air show. Our neighbors took care of the ground show. We had 36 artillery shells in all, and they did not disappoint. Our neighbors had countless fountains (literally, we lost count). Between the two houses, we had quite a display.
Sophia was frightened of the fireworks at first (are we surprised? No!). It took getting through nearly the whole box of Pop-its before she was comfortable stepping on them to make them pop. So, when we started the big show, she didn't like it at first. But her hesitation quickly turned into squeals of delight and furious clapping after each shell. And what a trooper! Both she and Nolan were up WAY past their bedtimes, but they were able to hang on to the end.
Except for the bug bites and the loss of one of our artillery launchers (run over by a car), a good time was had by all. Happy 4th to all!
